Summer Reading Program 2018

Beginning Monday, June 4


Toddlers (ages 0-3)  |  Children (ages 3-11) |  Teens (ages 11-18 |  Adults (ages 18+)

There is something for everyone this summer at the library, with programs for toddlers, children, teens and adults. Summer Reading runs from June to early August, and this year’s theme is “Libraries Rock.” We hope to encourage all the readers in our community to continue reading throughout the summer months. There are fun incentives, prizes and incredible events for all ages.


Toddlers

Reading Program:

Each baby/toddler who completes 12 or more of the early literacy activities on our Toddler Wheel will receive a free book. All participants will receive tickets to the “Libraries Rock” pool party held Saturday, August 4 at the Grafton Family Aquatic Center. All logs must be returned to the library no later than Saturday, August 4.

Performance by Tom Pease Thursday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. AGES 3+
Tom has an infectious sense of fun! He uses movement, sign language, humor & joy to create concerts that explore the role of music in shaping our lives and the world we live in. Tom connects and inspires with every show he does and always leaves audiences laughing & singing. No registration is required.

Storytimes:

Monday Movers June 4 – July 30 at 11:00 a.m. AGES 2+
Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to join in on this pumped up storytime featuring catchy music, energetic movement, and loads of activities! No registration is required.

Sing, Read & Play June 5 – July 31 at 11:00 a.m. AGES 1-3
Toddlers and their caregivers can enjoy songs, rhymes, fingerplays, movement and stories led by Mrs. Jones. After storytime, families are welcome to take advantage of the library’s space, toys, puzzles, building bricks, & manipulatives during open play. No registration is required.

Farmers’ Market Storytime July 12 – August 30 at 11:00 a.m. ALL AGES
Where: Grafton Farmers’ Market at Veterans Memorial Park, 13th Avenue, Grafton
Everyone knows the Grafton Farmers’ Market is a great place to get fresh local produce and handmade goods, but did you also know it offers free family entertainment? The Grafton Public Library brings their storytime to the park to reach children outside the library and introduce them to the joy of reading! No registration is required.


Children

Reading Program:

Children ages 3-11 track their time read over the summer.
 For every 15 minutes read, mark it off in your reading log.
Each week you will get the chance to redeem a drawing slip for a prize, just for visiting the library!
When you are finished tracking your summer reading, bring your final drawing slip into the library to collect your book prize and Pool Party tickets for the whole family.
There is no set amount of reading to complete the program; just do your best!
All participants will receive tickets to the “Libraries Rock” pool party held Saturday, August 4 at the Grafton Family Aquatic Center.
All logs must be returned to the library no later than Saturday, August 4.

Family Bingo Night Thursday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m.
Bring the whole family to Bingo Night at the Library! Play traditional Bingo for books and prizes for the family. Click Here to Register

Ms. Kim’s Amazing Animals Tuesday, July 10 at 2:00 & 7:00 p.m.
Have you ever wondered how a chinchilla takes a bath or what a bearded dragon likes to eat? Find these answers out and more, during one of Ms. Kim’s Amazing Animals presentations! No registration is required.

Library Legos:

Library Legos: Lego at the Races Wednesday, June 13, from 3:30-4:45 p.m.
We’re creating the ultimate race track. When it’s complete, you’ll get to make a one-of-a-kind race car to test it out! No registration is required.

Library Legos: Superhero vs. Villains Wednesday, June 27, from 3:30-4:45 p.m.
We’re constructing the ultimate in Superhero Headquarters and Villain Lairs. Build your superhero or villain a home to suit their powers & abilities! No registration is required.

Library Legos: Hollywood Legos Wednesday, July 11, from 3:30-4:45 p.m.
We’re making movie scenes out of Legos. We will be using Lego Movie Maker to turn your builds into a recorded movie! No registration is required.

Library Legos: Legos of the Future Wednesday, July 25, from 3:30-4:45 p.m.
We’re building an entirely Lego future. What do you think a grocery store might look like 50 years from now? A hotel, movie theater, homes & garages, schools, restaurants or sports arenas? The possibilities are endless and we want to see what you can imagine!
No registration is required.

Elementary Engineers:

Each week children will work to create something & overcome an obstacle. The variety of challenges means sometimes working alone, in pairs, or in groups. GRADES 2-5
Registration is required for each session individually. Registration begins one week prior to the date each session is to be held.

Teens

Reading Program:

Teens ages 11-18 track their reading throughout the summer using a Bingo sheet.
 Get a fine forgiveness card just for signing up!
 For every Bingo sheet you complete, receive ONE prize drawing.
 Receive a prize drawing each day you check out a Young Adult book.
 The more you read, the more chances you have to win!
 Attend programs for chances to win more incentives.

Banana Autopsy Monday, June 11, at 3:00 p.m.

When a banana expires in a mysterious way, it is your job to figure out what happened. Learn about what a medical examiner looks for when conducting an autopsy. Use surgical tools and medical charts to inspect this piece of fruit and determine the cause of death. All supplies provided. Ages 11-18. Click Here to Register

Button Making Tuesday, June 19, at 3:00 p.m.

The library’s children’s section is in need of new “buttons” for children to play with. Come draw the ABC’s and 123’s and use a machine to press them into magnetic buttons. You will also be able to create pinback buttons to take home. All supplies provided. Ages 11-18.

Popsockets Tuesday, July 14, at 6:00 p.m.

Popsockets help your phone and tablet do more! Use a pop socket as a grip for texting or to take better photos, as a stand for video chats, media viewing & reading, or add two and they become a cord wrap. Come to the library and learn how to make pop sockets that you can change out for every mood. All supplies provided. Ages 11-18. Click Here to Register

Guest speakers from the community will share their expertise on how to prepare for and survive the beginnings of adulthood. Reading Program:

– Challenge yourself to read three books and review one using our Adult Summer Reading Log
 Or, give yourself a greater challenge by completing our Summer Reading BINGO.
 Each reading log and/or BINGO sheet you complete enters you into a prize drawing.
 You can do more than one reading log or BINGO sheet, or a combination, for
multiple entries into the prize drawing.
 New reading logs and BINGO sheets can be picked up at the Adult Circulation Desk.
 Gift bag prizes contain books, a Grafton Chamber of Commerce check worth $10
redeemable at participating local businesses, and more!

We invite you to attend free movie showings of a newly released films in the lower level meeting room. You are encouraged to bring your own food and beverages. No registration required.
